My PSB Century 600i Speakers

I have a pair of PSB Century 600i speakers I bought quite some times ago. It never sounded right to me. The sound is small, laid back and not very clear. But all the reviews says they are good speakers. I don't understand why my is not as good. Finally, I decided to open them up and take a look. I found three issues.

1. This is a two-way speaker. PSB uses a first order low pass and a 3rd order high pass. The low pass is at 1.5k and the high pass is at 3k. This creates a big dip at 2.2k (4dB). I guess that explains why it sounds "laid back". So I made a 3rd order low-pass crossover at 3k to flatten the response. (Another problem with 1st order 1.5k crossing point is that it may make the speaker distort. speaker like this, 6.5 in woofer, normally has a response up to 4k. With this change, the sound is much "front" and bright.
2. the crossover uses those small electrolytic capacitors. After replacing them, the sound is much clear.
3. It uses fiber glass as damping material. But they are not on the wall but stuffed in the middle of the cabinet. This is a reflex type of box. I read box like these need empty space to let air flow. But walls need to be damped. So I moved all the fiber glass to the wall, put some foam on the wall behind the speakers. With these changes, the speaker is much "big" and the low is coming out. The "dry" sound in the mid-high is gone too. 

With all these changes, my speakers sound much better. I understand why PSB uses 1st order low-pass and cheap capacitors (well, maybe not. This is a $400 speakers/pair, adding another $20 to the cost should not be too bad). But I don't understand why can't they make the damping right. No extra money required only a bit of care.

Anyway, I can enjoy my music now, finally.

Move App and data to external SD card - Android phone

I have a phone that only have 1.7G memory. A few apps will fill the memory and make the phone run very slow. There are two Apps that can help with the situation, but you need to root the phone (have root access).
The first one is link2sd. This app will move you data to the external SD card (you need to create a partition of ext2 or ext3) and then make a link to the internal memory. That will save you a lot of internal memory.
The second app is called gl2sd. It is designed for games with a lot of data. This app requires root as well. It will move you game data to external memory and then you run your game from within gl2sd. If you run your game from outside (launch app directly) you will not see your data anymore. Restore takes a bit effect, too. You need to manually copy them back to your internal memory. Or you can make a backup before move the data.

Nexus 7 shutdown and not start

One day, my Nexus 7 (first generation) suddenly shuts itself down and I was not able to power it up any more. Charged it over night and it still does not coming back. Search the web and I found this post (post #15 by hiero). The problem turns out to be a loose power connector. Open the back, reset the battery position and reconnect the battery, the tablet powers up just fine.

All About Wii

Wii is hot. But some of its feature or technical spec is not very clear. I try to list as many as I can find about it. Hope it helps.

• Wii wireless network speed - I cannot find it anywhere but my route tells me it is 54Mbs. You can also connect the Wii to the network through a USB network adaptor. I don't know the speed over there. Anyone knows?

• Wii video play back - There are two things here, one is play back through the photo channel. In this mode, only MJPEG is supported, which takes a lot of space and can only play video stored on the SD card. 2G MJPEG isn't much to watch. More on this later.

• Wii can play back youtube video if you bought the opera browser. But video is slaggush. I don't know if it is due to the network speed or the processing power. 54Mbs should be enough. You can also stream video to Wii though web brower from a computer, just like from a web site. More on this later.

Check Engine Light On

Ten days before my smog check, my 98 Camry check engine is on. Checked everything under the hood, looks all ok. Went to Auto Zone and get my self a code scanner. Auto Zone rent you one for 150 and if you return within 30 days they return your memory.

Plug in the scanner, it gave me code P0125 and P1135. I cleared the code with the scanner and the light went off for a few miles and then comes back. So the problem is real.

Search through the net and found the O2 sensor most likely is the cause. Get a multimeter and measured it, it is bad. So I went around and found again Auto Zone has the lowest price. Order one and replaced the sensor. Then cleared the code with code scan. It might clear itself given enough time but I can't wait. Since then the check engine light never come back and I passed the smog test.
